Deep within the lush cocoa forests of Ghana grows the remarkable Kombo Tree (Pycnanthus angolensis), also known as African Nutmeg.

For generations, communities in West and Central Africa have treasured the rich, dark butter extracted from its seeds. Traditionally associated with Ghanaian body-care practices, kombo butter has been valued in massage rituals following long days of physical labour. Its rich texture makes it particularly suited to slow, deliberate massage of tired, overworked muscles and areas of tension.

Complementing this traditional African botanical is arnica, a flowering plant with its own centuries-old heritage in European herbal preparations and traditional body-care practices.

Together, these two botanicals bring distinct traditions of plant-based care to IRONWOOD, creating a rich, earthy massage salve inspired by generations of botanical knowledge.

Today, fair trade partnerships help create sustainable income opportunities for Ghanaian women who harvest and process kombo seeds, while giving local communities another reason to preserve these remarkable trees.
